Sleep Myths

You can get by with less than 7 hours a night of sleep.

If you must have a cup of coffee in the morning to get by, then you did not get enough sleep.  Most need between 7-9 hours of sleep.

Snoring is no big deal.

This can be an indication of sleep apnea.  This causes many other problems.

You can make up for loss of sleep on the week-ends.

Trying to sleep more on the week-ends, messes with the sleep cycle, making it harder to get good rest during the week.

Sleeping pills like Ambien help you sleep.

These take away the REM sleep cycle.

People who are taking sleeping pills aren’t awake, but they are not sleeping either. They are sedated.

Drugs like Ambien have been shown to weaken the brain cell connections associated with learning — it may be causing memory damage over time.

It’s better to get up early to work out, rather than to sleep in.

You should not skip on sleep to get your exercise in.  You need sufficient sleep to heal your body once you have exercised.

If you awake in the middle of the night, stay in bed.

If it has been longer than 20 minutes, get out of bed.  Do something.

Alcohol may help you fall asleep, but often as the effect wears off, people wake up and have trouble falling back to sleep.  Give yourself a few hours after the last drink before sleeping.

Some people don’t dream.

We all dream throughout the night.  These are not even limited to the REM sleep portion of the cycle. When we dream, we process emotions and experiences that we’ve had during the day.  This seems to be important  for both emotional and mental health.  Dreams are also connected to creativity and problem-solving.

So How to Sleep Better?

Try Sleeping Naked!

Heavy blankets or wearing warm clothes at night can negatively affect your sleep.

Natural body cooling at night can help lower cortisol levels.  These levels reach their lowest between 10PM and 2AM, when the body is resting deeply.  After 2AM the adrenals start to increase the output of cortisol in preparation for the next day.

When you don’t get enough sleep, you wake with higher cortisol levels, which is why many are hungry after a poor night of sleep.

Keeping the bedroom higher than 70 degrees prevents the release of melatonin and growth hormones.  These have potent anti-aging properties.  Melatonin is secreted when you sleep in complete darkness.  It triggers slight cooling of the body.  Growth hormones are secreted when the body cools.  Growth hormones are essential for healing of the body

Oxytocin is a powerful feel-good hormone, which is involved in orgasm and sexual responsiveness, stress, combating depression, reducing intestinal inflammation.

Touching skin can boost the release of oxytocin.  And of course, touching skin of another while naked can lead to the most obvious benefit of sleeping naked, it can trigger sexual desire.
