Gut health is not a topic many like to discuss, but so many have great issues with their gut.  With functional medicine, we say that if one’s poor health did not start with the gut, one must still address the gut if they desire good health.  For some,  their poor health begins with gut issues.  They are not kind to their gut – too much alcohol, too many aspirins, or many other issues.  Others have been very kind to their GI system, but suddenly they are in a car wreck and end up in the hospital.  Surgery follows, as well as antibiotics, and now the gut is messed up.  Another is in a very stressful relation, and the stress interferes with good gut health.

Good gut health is not created through medications.  In fact, many of the medications for GI issues are actually really damaging to great gut health.  One such group of drugs are the PPI’s (Proton Pump Inhibitors, such as Omeprazole).  Many think these cannot be bad, because they can be bought over the counting without needing a prescription.  Not so.  These drugs work by preventing acid production in the stomach, thereby lessening abdominal pain and reflux.  We need stomach acid to digest our foods.  Without proper digestion of foods, autoimmune issues can develop when these improperly digested foods reach the small intestine.  From this point one can experience onset of pain issues, fatigue, headaches, brain fog, and so much more.

Functional medicine is all about restoring normal function and anatomy of the gastrointestinal system.  This ensures proper digestion and absorption of good foods, maintenance of great hormone levels in the body, proper function of our immune system (80% of the immune system is located in the gut), normal cognition and healthy emotions.
